How it works

Fair splits in three steps

  1. Enter the tip pool

The total tips being shared for the shift or day — cash and card together.

  2. Add your team

Each person and their hours. Using a points system? Enter points instead — the math is the same.

  3. Pay it out

Each share is proportional to hours and rounded to the cent, with rounding reconciled so the payouts always sum to the pool.

FAQ

Questions restaurant owners ask

How does tip pooling by hours work?

Each person’s share = (their hours ÷ total hours worked by everyone) × the tip pool. Someone who worked 6 of the team’s 24 total hours gets 25% of the pool.

Can I use points or roles instead of hours?

Yes — enter point values instead of hours. Many houses weight roles (e.g. servers 10 points, bussers 5) and the proportional math works identically.

Is tip pooling legal?

Tip pooling is legal in the US but regulated: federal rules generally bar owners and managers from taking from the pool, and states add their own requirements. This calculator does the math — check your state’s labor rules for the policy.

Why don’t the shares sometimes look perfectly even?

Shares are rounded to the cent, and any leftover cent from rounding is assigned to the first person on the list so the payouts always add up to the exact pool.

Bigger pools start with more direct orders

More direct orders mean more tippable volume without marketplace commissions eating the check. Menuline sets up commission-free ordering for $1/month for your first 3 months.
